I would be interested in knowing who is 11-20.

  2. Sérgio Says:

Informix is one of IBM most profitable database engines.
It is a enterprise level engine for thousands of databases with millions of users without maintenance.
It is one of the engines that have more evolved in the last years.
It is NOT an object-oriented database. It is an object relational database.
The new version : Cheetah will be an important improvement.

I think you should rewrite your DB2 & Informix statement.

DB2 is currently @ version 9, introducing pureXML.

Informix is currently at version 10, currently beta program for version 11. Informix has some object-oriented features, but it is a real fast, easy-to-use, autonomic, OLTP-centric engine.

Does the person who wrote this page have any understanding of Database vendors and WHAT they actually do

  5. Ian M Gumby Says:

What is the criteria that you are using to catagorize the “best” databases?

Clearly your ranking is most likely based on the skills that you have on hand and does not reflect the real market place.

Informix was never and will never be an Object Oriented database. Informix since the inclusion of Illustra’s OR (thats object-relational) technology has become the premiere Object Relational database and continues to have success under IBM.

Perhaps the only reason you lack understanding about the product is the fact that it requires only a handfull of DBAs to run and maintain a really large deployment of remote database servers.

Or the fact that many companies which OEM Informix and embed it in to their products don’t like to talk about it because its their dirty little secret that gives them a competitive advantage.

Or the fact that you don’t grok the difference between and Object Oriented Database and an Object Relational Database…

I could go on, but I get the feeling any comment which slams your lack of expertise and intelligence is going to be removed.

But hey! What do I know? I just work with the technology rather that create phony top 10 lists. ;-)

  6. Sam Chill Says:

You guys are right. Informix is object-relational database, not object oriented db, my fool!

How was this list created? I compiled this list based on vote by a team of 10 technical consultants and managers on a project for a state agency. During discussion of pros and cons of RDBMS, I suggested to list top 10 databases for consideration, that’s the list.

Here’s an interesting thing: One of consultants was formal Informix employee who got laid off during IBM merger. According to him, IBM wanted to ‘protect’ DB2 therefore acquired Informix in order to ‘kill’ it. Is this true? Is Informix ‘dying’?

I was Oracle DBA a few years ago but never worked on Informix. I mainly work on enterprise architecture now thus don’t have the latest knowledge from the database world. I thought Informix should be on rank 5 or 6 by its user base, but since it’s not RDBMS, and someone hates it, it was end of to the bottom. As you see, this list was created based on our experience. I’ll do more research and create a new top 20 databases later. Anyway, all of your informative comments are appreciated.

By the way, we finally selected Oracle for our project. Since many California agencies use Oracle, many of us consider Oracle the ‘safest’ choice.

    thank you
